Position Overview: Engineering Learnership – Rigger / Ropesman

As a Rigger / Ropesman in the Engineering Leadership program, you will receive technical training, hands-on experience, and mentorship throughout your leadership. You will be supported in becoming an integral part of South Deep’s engineering team while gaining valuable qualifications and expertise in the mining sector.

Requirements to Apply for the Engineering Learnership Programme

To apply for the Engineering Learnership at South Deep, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Minimum Academic Requirements:

• Grade 12 certificate in Mathematics and Science.
• Full N2 qualifications with the following four subjects:
  • Engineering Mathematics
  • Engineering Science
  • N2 Rigging Trade Theory
  • Engineering Drawing

Health and Fitness Requirements:

• Candidates must be declared medically fit for the position, which will be assessed through a risk-based medical examination at the Gold Fields Occupational Health Centre.
• Applicants must also pass a Heat Tolerance Screening Test and other assessments as required to evaluate their suitability for the role.

What Will You Learn During the Engineering Learnership?

As part of the Engineering Learnership Programme, you will receive both practical work-based training and external technical training. This dual approach ensures that you gain the technical expertise needed to perform in a mining environment while preparing you for a career as an artisan in rigging and ropesman.

The programme covers a variety of skills, including:

• Safe rigging and lifting techniques
• Handling of heavy machinery
• Preventive maintenance procedures
• Health and safety protocols on the mine
• Teamwork and communication in high-pressure environments

You will also be expected to complete relevant short courses as part of your ongoing development.

Key Responsibilities as a Rigger / Ropesman Learnership

• Participate in technical training as prescribed by MQA (Mining Qualifications Authority) and complete short courses as required by the mine.
• Adhere to the company’s health and safety regulations and wear all prescribed personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Promote and support teamwork in all activities.
• Seek feedback regularly to improve performance and ensure continuous development.
• Actively participate in developmental discussions and training sessions.
• Follow the company’s code of conduct and contribute positively to the work environment.
• Be an effective member of the South Deep Gold Mine team, living by the company’s values of safety, integrity, respect, responsibility, innovation, and collaborative delivery.
