What Does a General Assistant II (Garden & Grounds & Sports Fields) Do?
As a General Assistant II, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping our university green, safe, and sports-ready. You’ll work across gardens, grounds, sports fields, and more. Your role includes:
Garden & Grounds: Lawn and Turf Maintenance
- Mowing lawns and maintaining sports fields
- Fertilizing and cultivating turf
- Preparing cricket pitches and ensuring match readiness
- Raking leaves, pruning shrubs, and edging flower beds
- Removing debris and litter to maintain cleanliness
Plant & Nursery Care
- Trimming trees and maintaining plant beds
- Watering using hoses and portable systems
- Applying fertilizers and pest control (e.g., insecticides for fire ants)
- Designing and maintaining specialty gardens
Tools, Equipment & Safety
Maintenance and Repairs
- Operate lawnmowers, leaf blowers, pruners, and power tools
- Repair and maintain garden tools and equipment
- Assist with irrigation system repairs and installations
- Keep storage and outdoor areas clean and organized
Health & Safety
- Follow UJ safety protocols, wear protective gear, and ensure clean workspaces
- Handle tools and equipment with care and comply with environmental policies
Landscaping and Design
Bring creativity into your daily tasks by contributing to the campus’s aesthetic beauty:
- Follow landscaping plans and install garden features
- Pour cement for borders and outdoor structures
- Suggest improvements for visual appeal and sustainability
Team Collaboration & UJ Values
Work collaboratively with other groundskeepers and coordinators to ensure that sports grounds are fully prepared for varsity games and public events. This involves not only maintaining the facilities but also enhancing the overall experience for athletes and spectators alike.

Minimum Requirements
- Education: Grade 12 (NQF 4)
- Experience: 3 years of related experience, including cricket pitch maintenance
- Recommended: Valid Code 8 Driver’s License
